CA Board of Nursing continuing education rules
Renewal Deadline
Licenses renew every 2 years on the last day of the nurse's birth month. First-time renewals within 2 years of initial licensure are exempt from CE except for implicit bias.
Mandatory Topics
Required under AB 1407 for newly licensed nurses within the first 2 years of holding a license. Covers identifying unconscious biases, corrective measures, historical impacts on minority communities, and perinatal-specific equity topics.
Additional Notes
Nurse Practitioners who provide primary care to a population 25%+ aged 65+ must complete at least 20% of CE hours in gerontology, dementia care, or care of older patients (effective January 1, 2025). LVNs are governed by the BVNPT, not the BRN.
